A student organization is saying no to sweatpants.
OCU Rhythms, a student-run stomp group, will wear athletic pants during performances beginning this semester, said Laura Sniegowski, co-executive choreographer for the group.
The pants will allow the stomp group to build a more professional image. Members of the group previously wore their own sweatpants and jeans to performances, Sniegowski said.
“We are seen all throughout campus with the different organizations,” she said. “It makes us look better as an organization to have that uniformed look.
“And it makes us look more recognizable on campus, so we can have more performances and work with more organizations.”
Student Senate funded $20 for each $35 pair of pants at their Nov. 2 meeting. Members of the organization will pay the $15 difference, Sniegowski said.
Sen. Arianna Harmon (religion) and Sen. Edwards Ayo-Odugbesan (international) voted against the legislation, which funded the organization $560.
Harmon said she didn’t think it was right to fund pants for members who don’t exist yet.
The legislation funded 28 pairs of pants while there are 26 members of OCU Rhythms, she said.
“I just didn’t think that would be responsible,” Harmon said.
OCU Rhythms did not apply for organizational allotments. Allotments provide funding from Student Government Association for organizations to fund events. The only funding OCU Rhythms officials receive is a $15 membership fee, which covers an OCU Rhythms T-shirt and pays for “Stomp Out,” a new event the group will host in the spring. Seasoned members also pay a $5 fee for the event, Sniegowski said.
“It’s just kind of nice to have that burden taken off,” she said.
