Senators passed two pieces of emergency legislation tonight. The bills were amended before they passed by unanimous consent.
Senators approved funding for Multicultural Student Association’s annual International Showcase. The initial bill, written by Sen. Edwards Ayo-Odugbesan, requested $650 dollars in rolling appropriations. The request was amended to fund $450 for the event. Sen. Chris Macella wrote the approved amendment, which cut funding by $200.
Also approved was funding for five students to attend the Black Pre-Law Conference & Preparation Conference and Law School Recruitment Fair from Nov. 11-14 in Houston, Texas. The initial bill, written by Sen. Sooner Davenport, requested $360 for the students’ meals and about $1,400 for three hotel rooms. The request was amended to fund one hotel room and no meals. Sen. Ciera Terry wrote the approved amendment, which cut funding by about $1,300. The students were funded a total of about $450.
Sen. Sarah Cook, president pro-tempore, said senators still need to work on communication while writing bills. She said she hopes this will reduce the number of emergency bills that are proposed each week.
