Students sighted in their pajamas Oct. 11 in the Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center were not dressed that way due to lack of effort or laundry funds.
Student Government Association officials hosted an all-day pajama party to mark the opening of the university center’s 24-hour study area.
The university center is open 24 hours Monday through Thursday for students to utilize as an alternative study spot on campus, said John Riesenberg, president of SGA.
“We were really excited to about the new center and we wanted a kick off to signify the opening of the 24 hour center, and thank all the people who helped make it work,” he said.
The kick off consisted of an all-day pajama party where officials decorated the center with pillows and blankets. The cost of additional decorations was not determined at press time.
SGA officials publicized the event with fliers and countdowns outside of the Caf, around campus, on Facebook, and via e-mail.
Representatives from Student Health Services sat outside of the caf on Monday and handed out fliers describing good study habits. SGA representatives also gave out pens and fliers detailing what the new center hours entail.
Card swipes were installed at the beginning of the week of Oct. 4, Riesenberg said.
Officials timed the grand opening of the center deliberately.
“We wanted to make sure everything was ready to go, and it was very convenient to do during mid-terms to remind students that the week of midterms is an especially important time to study,” Riesenberg said.
The card swipes were activated for the first time at 12:30 p.m. Monday. SGA officials arranged for a ceremonial card swipe at this time for officials that helped with the project.
Jarred Johnson, SGA director of policies and initiatives, performed the ceremonial swipe.
Administrative officials present at the event were Rick Hall, vice president for student affairs; Liz Donnelly, associate vice president for student affairs; Lyndel Harris, chief of police; Jeff Castleberry, director of facilities, Dee Llanusa; student activities coordinator, Brett Wheat-Simms, general manager of Sodexo, and Kelly Keegan, director of food services.
