Deadline for students to apply for organization allotments is approaching.
Organizations have until Oct. 23 to fill out applications. They are due at the end of the ninth week of school, said Kayla Masnek Student Government Association’s secretary of finance.
“Any registered student organization is eligible to apply,” she said.
Campus recognized organizations can apply to receive allotments to fund events. Allotments are provided by SGA officials.
“There is an excel spreadsheet budget request form that must be filled out, telling SGA how much everything costs,” Masnek said. “There is also another document where organizations explain each event and how it furthers their organization’s mission and goals.”
Masnek serves on the appropriations committee, with the president of SGA, five to seven SGA members, and at least seven organization representatives.
Masnek said that the committee personally reviews each application individually before deciding which organizations will receive allotments.
Monique King, marketing/sports business junior, attended a SGA meeting two weeks ago. She went to explain to the Senate why her student organization, Black Student Association, would like to receive funding.
“They ask a lot of detailed questions and require an itemized list,” King said. “I think it’s good they ask questions and get information before they make their selections.”
When an organization requests funding, a requirements is that one event funded from SGA’s allotment to that group be an event that the entire school can attend. Campus wide events take priority over other organizational events.
“That makes a lot of sense and shows that SGA has unbiased funding,” said Kellynn Brack, business administration freshman.
For the Fall 2010 semester about 30-40 organizations received allotments.
“There is never a set amount of money that we give,” Masnek said. “It depends on how many organizations apply and what they need.”
SGA tries to stay within the spending limits of $15,000-$20,000, Masnek said.
“We really want to give back to the students and the campus as a whole,” she said. “We fund events that couldn’t happen without the money we give.
