One sorority took things back to the ‘90s on Thursday, Oct. 7.
The Beta Beta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha hosted a ‘90s House Party in the rotunda in Meinders School of Business. The chapter is made up of women from University of Central Oklahoma and OCU. The “90s House Party” was part of the sorority’s “Skee Week.”
The week was full of activities that allowed the women to get to know each other as well as learn about different causes and philanthropies. The party was open to the public and students from Langston University and OU also were invited to attend. The event was from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. and cost was $3 for Greek students and $5 for non-Greek students to attend.
“This was the first large event by our chapter on OCU’s campus,” Bailey Perkins, political science junior said. “We are starting to become more active here and make our sorority more prevalent at OCU.”
President KenYata McClain estimated that 50-75 students attended the event.
“All proceeds from tonight’s event go to a sickle cell anemia foundation,” said the UCO public health administration senior.
“We are a group that focuses on women of color getting college degrees,” McClain said. “Our philanthropy involves promoting programs that deal with economy and building the African American community.”
Daniel Moore said he came out to support the cause.
“I know someone that has sickle cell so this is something close to me,” the youth ministry freshman said.
A requirement for the event was to dress in ‘90s clothing. A DJ played ‘90s music and students danced.
The sorority plans to have more events on campus in the future and the public is always welcome to attend, Perkins said.
