Two of seven freshman candidates attended Student Senate meeting Tuesday. The freshman are campaigning this week for freshman-at-large seats for Student Government Association’s Student Senate.
The candidates attending the meeting were Courtney Cirone, acting freshman, and Caleb Howard, mass communications freshman. The candidates said they attended the meeting because they wanted to know what their responsibilities as a Senator would include.
“I wanted to have more information on how the organization operates that I’d like to be a part of,” Cirone said.
The candidates received an e-mail from Justin DaMetz, president of the Senate, recommending they attend the Tuesday meeting.
“I just thought they should come to the meeting if they want to be a member of this body,” DaMetz said.
DaMetz said he also heard from two candidates, Tanner Stuck, religion/psychology freshman, and Angie Coumanova, who could not attend the meeting.
Cirone and Howard said attending the meeting gave them more insight on the organization and increased their interest in becoming a Senator.
“I like to be involved in making decisions,” Howard said.
Student Senate is a branch of the Student Government Association responsible for proposing and voting on legislation. The two types of legislation the Senate creates are appropriations and resolutions, DaMetz said.
Appropriations deal with allocating student activity fees to different student organizations based upon needs and requests. Resolutions are bills that involve the will of the Senate and create action, DaMetz said.
Freshman-at-large Senators essentially represent the freshman class on the Senate, DaMetz said.
