Harkins Theater raises prices of tickets for free movie night.
The price increase began at the beginning of last semester, but the group rate was raised as a whole, not toward OCU exclusively.
Student Activities Council buys 50 ticket bundles for $350 and expects 500 to 700 students to attend each free movie night, said MaryAnn Grover, vice president for SAC. SAC purchases tickets for the entire semester at once and gets dates approved with Harkins Theatre, 150 E. Reno Ave.
While SGA has looked at moving free movie night to Cinemark Tinseltown, 6001 N. Martin Luther King Ave., for cheaper tickets, they have decided to stay at Harkins for the atmosphere.
“There is a more community environment, and more to do than just see a movie,” Grover said. “We are really content staying at Harkins because we like the environment the location provides”
There are three free movie nights scheduled for this semester. The first one is Jan. 28, then there will be one in February and one in April.
“It allows us to not only see movies, but explore genres we wouldn’t otherwise,” said Julianna Reese, design and production sophomore. “It’s just a relaxing night out with friends.”
Grover said she wants to stress that SAC will not cancel free movie nights.
“My number one priority is free movie night. That is the first thing I budget for,” Said Grover.
