The first week of the semester is all about meeting new people and making introductions. There are so many new professors, staffers and classmates to meet that it begins to seem like a blur of new faces and names you’ll never remember.
Forgive me while I add my name and face to the mix. I am so excited to introduce myself as the editor-in-chief for Student Publications.
First, a little bit about me. I was born and raised in Moore, Okla., where I have spent most of my life either running from or chasing tornados. I graduated from Moore High School in May 2013 and came to OCU the following fall. I then got a job as a staff writer for Stu Pub, and, two years later, here I am introducing myself to you as the person in charge of your student media staff.
I majored in journalism because, to me, it is about keeping the people around me informed about the world around them. The need for information also is why I chose to become editor-in-chief. I want to offer you information that makes you really think about your world. I believe we serve the campus community, even when that means spending all afternoon trying to determine if a rumor is true, only to discover that the time was wasted because there’s nothing to report.
I have set a few goals for myself as editor-in-chief this academic year.
First, I want Student Publications to be more engaged. This means expanding our social media presence and asking you more about what impacts you. With that said, be sure to check us out on Facebook and Twitter under “MediaOCU.” Strengthening our relationship with you, the campus community, will help with my second goal.
My second goal is to have more content that students want to read. So less content about events and more content about what students care about. I want you to tell us what you want to read about at MediaOCU.com and in The Campus newspaper. We are always interested in learning about how we can better serve you. If you see something on campus that you think is interesting or want to know more about, let us know.
I am excited to start this year as editor-in-chief. If you see me around, stop and say hi! If there is anything I can do for you, let me know by emailing me at email@example.com.
I hope you’re all moved in and ready to start the semester.
Welcome home, Stars!
