Delta Alpha Chi is hosting its annual Gumbo Fest to raise money for an upcoming mission trip.
The fundraiser is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the pavilion on the West Lawn.
“It’s a good alternative to the caf, and it’s pretty authentic gumbo, so people really like it,” said Matt Austin, religion junior.
The event started several years ago when the fraternity was trying to come up with a way to raise money. A brother from Louisiana suggested they have a Cajun night and serve gumbo.
“By doing this, we fulfill who we’re supposed to be,” Austin said.
Gumbo Fest usually takes about a week and half to plan and costs less than $100 to host. The fraternity has always broken even in the past.
Four types of gumbo will be served: chicken, sausage, shrimp, and vegetarian. Drinks will be served. The cost is $5 per bowl.
Gumbo Fest is DAX’s only fundraiser as a fraternity, and the money raised will go to the general fund to help buy things for brotherhood events.
Some of the money also will go toward their upcoming mission trip to Chicago this summer. The fraternity went last summer to help with daycare in inner city churches.
Gumbo Fest is open to the entire campus. DAX’s members are hoping for a large turnout.
“DAX has a pretty major impact on the campus, and our goal is to be in service to OCU,” Austin said.
