Students have elected a new Student Government Association president.
Beatrize Martinez, justice studies/economics junior, was elected following a runoff election versus Terrance Craft, mass communications sophomore, March 28.
Martinez is a member of Student Senate and a member of the women’s wrestling team.
“I’ve already started thinking about who I need to meet with,” Martinez said. “I want to start by meeting with the Greek presidents and leaders of Delta Alpha Chi and Kappa Phi.”
After she meets with these organizations, she plans to meet with smaller organizations.
“I want to see what these organizations want and need,” she said.
Martinez also said she plans to create a strategy to address student questions and concerns.
“I imagine there are a large volume of questions and concerns,” Martinez said.
Martinez plans to have an application and interview process for her executive cabinet appointments.
“This will make sure the best possible people are appointed to the jobs,” she said.
The SGA president also sits on the board of trustees.
“I feel like it’s kind of a lot of pressure, but if we can get surveys going and student input, I can bring that information to the trustees,” Martinez said. “I want to show them that SGA is evolving and really wants to make a difference.
“If I can bring responses to trustees, I feel that we can make positive strides for the short term and long term for OCU students.”
Martinez said her main goal is campus unity and communication to students.
“Communication and unity will help people feel that SGA is working for them,” she said.
Martinez said she feels prepared for her upcoming duties as SGA president.
“I haven’t been the leader of a large organization before, and I know it is going to be a lot of work,” Martinez said. “I am prepared for students to ask me a lot of questions, and I will rely on my cabinet to do their jobs effectively.”
The inauguration for SGA officials is scheduled for 7 p.m. April 16 in the Great Glass Atrium in the Wanda L. Bass Music Center.
