SGA contenders campaign, aim for the win

John Riesenberg, Student Government Association president; Justin Dametz, SGA vice president, and Leah Diaz, vice president for Student Activities Council, are inaugurated in Spring 2010 in Great Glass Atrium in the Wanda L. Bass Music Center.

Thirty-one students began campaigning for open Student Government Association positions last week.

Contested positions include SGA president, president of Senate/vice president of SGA, and the sophomore at-large Student Senate Seat. See a full list of candidates here.

The Election Commission must approve all materials prior to distribution, said Cameron Bell, SGA chief of staff. Candidates running for executive branch positions are prohibited from  spend more than $500 on their campaign materials. All other elections have a limit of $200.

Faculty and Staff members are prohibited from officially endorsing a candidate, according to an e-mail sent by John Riesenberg, president of SGA. This includes granting a candidate access to any e-mail distribution list or granting regularly-scheduled class time to a candidate.

Candidates will have the option of campaigning at the official candidate forum hosted at 7:30 p.m. March 24 in the Great Hall in Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center. Its purpose is to inform students about the potential officers. It will consist of a caucus and a debate.

Elections will take place from March 29-30 online at ocuinvolved.com. There also will be a voting kiosk available outside the caf in Tom and Brenda McDaniel University Center.
