The OCU women’s basketball team finished the season with a win Feb. 26 against Southern Nazarene, putting the Stars at No. 1 in the Sooner Athletic Conference.
The women’s team also is ranked No. 2 in NAIA Division 1.
Coach Rob Edmisson attributes the team’s success to two things.
“I have a great staff of assistant coaches to work with,” he said. “I also have a great group of young ladies who are committed to the team.”
The women’s basketball team placed first in conference eight out of the 11 years that Edmisson has coached.
“Since we have so many wins, we are not very well liked in our conference,” Edmisson said. “We were picked to win it, and everyone expected us to win it.”
With the first place title, the women’s basketball team will be the No. 1 seed at the SAC Tournament this weekend.
“We are coming to the tournament excited,” Edmisson said.
The team must win three games in three days to win the tournament.
The team received an automatic bid to the national tournament in Jackson, Tenn since the women are first in the SAC.
The winner of this weekend’s tournament also will receive a bid to the national tournament.
“Expectations of this team are high,” he said. “It’s a lot of pressure on the ladies.”
Edmisson plays 10 or 11 team members each game, which he said creates a lot of depth.
“We have team chemistry,” he said. “Our team loves each other and look out for each other.”
Sophomore Forward Lauren Gober said the team deserved to win.
“For us to win the conference is a great accomplishment,” she said. “We play hard every night.”
